Of Kings and Prophets Episode 2 Review

Well, I suppose the best you can say is that at least this last episode of Of Kings and Prophets was better than the first one!  And to be honest, it really is better than “Offerings of Blood.”  The Biblical accuracy is improved somewhat (though they still make one egregious error near the end of the episode).  There is also less gratuitous sex (though there’s still one terribly-gratuitous sex scene which pretty much destroys the character).  Unfortunately, that’s not quite enough to redeem the series, considering all the problems.

Of Kings and Prophets Episode 1 Review

When I first saw the promos for Of Kings and Prophets (ABC’s new miniseries that airs immediately after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), I was actually excited.  After all, the account of David is one of the most exciting sections of the Bible—and practically begs for an adaptation which takes some inspiration from Game of Thrones.  The Biblical account is replete with courtly intrigue, romance, military conquest, action… all the elements that make for a good historical movie or TV series.  And all of those elements are in fact present in the Of Kings and Prophets series premiere.

Don't Let Others Define Us

Yesterday Amy and I decided to go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  It was a really good movie, but I’m not going to talk about that this time around.  Instead, I want to talk about a conversation that we had while waiting in line to enter the theater—naturally there was already a line an hour before the previews!  Amy and I happened to be right in front of an older couple and struck up a conversation with them.  We started off talking about Star Wars vs. Star Trek, but we soon discovered that we were both pastors (Exhibit #47 in favor of my argument that all pastors are geeks!), he with the United Methodist Church and I with The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.

Killing the Son of God: A Review of the Killing Jesus Miniseries

Killing Jesus is based on the book by Bill O’Reilly and tells the story of Jesus’ life, death, and ministry, from the Magi’s visitation until the immediate aftermath of His death.  The focus of the book (and subsequently of the miniseries/event) is on the outside forces which conspired together to execute Him on a cross like a criminal.  While it accurately portrays the outside Roman and Jewish forces and their reasons for desiring Jesus’ death, there are some very serious flaws in this miniseries.
